If you serious about doing SEO for your Joomla site. Google Analytic (GA) is the tool you can not miss. Therefore, this article will guide you step-by-step on how to add Google Analytic tracking code to your Joomla site.

Google Analytic and it’s important to your SEO effort

Google Analytic is the freemium website analytic tools provided by Google.

Almost any webmaster from casual blogger to multi millions dollar company has an use for it. It tracks your traffic, helps you get insight of current users, and through that you can significantly improve your SEO performance.

But first things first, you need to add it to your Joomla site. Let’s show you how.

Get Google Analytic tracking code

Despite which method you use for adding Google Analytic (GA) in your Joomla site, first you must have a GA account and its tracking code.

Embed the tracking code before the section of your website is how GA can monitor your traffic.

Follow these steps to get tracking code of your website.

Step 1: Go to analytics.google.com, login with your Google account

Step 2: Click “Sign Up” to start using Google Analytic.

Step 3: Fill your website information, then click “Get tracking ID” at the end.

Step 4: Copy the tracking code, then move to the next section.

From here, you can choose one of the 3 methods to add Google Analytic code in your Joomla site.

  • Using Joomla default template
  • Using template settings (JoomlaShine)
  • Using extension

Add Google Analytic using Joomla default template

After get the tracking code, you can follow these steps to add Google Analytic (GA) using default Joomla template. For this example, I will demonstrate to you using Protostar template. (Breeze 3 is the same)

Step 1: Login to your Joomla site backend

Step 2: In the control panel, go to Extensions/Templates/Templates, then chose Protostar Details and Files 

Step 3: Go to find index.php, and add your GA tracking code before the tag

You have now successfully added your GA code in your Joomla site. 

Add Google Analytic using JoomlaShine template

After get the tracking code, you can follow these steps to add Google Analytic (GA) using default JoomlaShine template. For this example, I will demonstrate to you using JSN Yoyo 2 template.

It’s much easier than using Joomla default template. It don’t need you to tweak into any Joomla core code.

Step 1: Login to your Joomla site backend

Step 2: In the control panel, go to Extensions/Templates, then choose your JoomlaShine template (JSN Yoyo 2). Step 3: In the template configuration, go to System, and add your GA tracking code in the “before ” section.

You have now successfully added your GA code in your Joomla site using JoomlaShine template.

Add Google Analytic using Joomla extension/plugin

If you search on JED, there are many useful extensions/plugins that will help you add your Google Analytic (GA) code easily. However, to save up your time, I will present to you the 2 most convenient and easy-to-use extension.

Asynchronous Google Analytics

It’s come with both free and paid version. However, for adding GA code, you only need the free version. Please follow these steps to use this plugin.

Step 1: Download the plugin, and install it in your Joomla site.

Step 2: Go to Extensions/ Plugins, search for: System - Google Analytic.

Step 3: In the Option tab, fill in your GA tracking ID.

Note: you can find the tracking ID when getting GA tracking code.

Step 4: Enable the Plugin.

DC Joomla Google Analytics Plugin

Developed by Collective Ray. This plugin also totally free and very easy to use. If you like it, you can donate a beer for its creators. Please follow these guide to use the plugin.

Step 1: Download the plugin, and install it in your Joomla site

Step 2: Go to Extensions/ Plugins, search for: System - DC Google Analytic.

Step 3: In the Plugin, fill in your GA tracking ID in Google Analytic Code field.

Note: you can find the tracking ID when getting GA tracking code.

Step 4: Enable the Plugin.

Check your Google Analytic code set up

To see if it works or not, you can check in the active user visitor in your GA control panel. In the meantime, also open your website in another browser tab. If you see your real time visitor increasing, then it works.
