Joomla 3.5 – What we get, what we lose, & what we should do

Joomla 3.5 – What we get, what we lose, & what we should do

Joomla 3.5 is the next stable version that all Joomla users are waiting for. I believe that we should have a detailed look at what Joomla 3.5 brings to us and what we will lose.

I did some detailed research and in this article, I’d love you share with you all the things I know about Joomla 3.5.

What will we get?

New routing system

Confirmed by the Joomla team about the great work of Hannes Papenberg, we will be sure to have a great experience with new routing system in Joomla 3.5. Soon, we will be free of URL problems. No more worries about the different URLs for the same content or unnecessary Ids. And no more anger because the wrong modules are loaded due to wrong URLs.

A new routing system gives you the chance to have control over all URLs so you can improve your ranking in search engine results easier.

New email notifications on Joomla updates

Thanks to Nic Dionysopoulos for offering us an amazing feature. From Joomla 3.5 you can configure to get a notification via email whenever Joomla has a new version. It keeps you always updated without checking the backend as normal.

Above are two confirmed features which will appear in Joomla 3.5. It’s a bit sad to know that the new media manager and the Jlayout are not included in this version. But I think we will see them as soon as possible. For Joomla users, who don’t know about these features, here’s the information:

New media manager

New media manager is one of the most-awaited features of Joomla 3.5. The interface is redesigned with the aim to be cleaner and more intuitive.  You will have many powerful tools to improve image editing such as: crop, resize or rotate the image. You also can modify the media’s data just by clicking the image in media manager. All this will help you save a lot of time on working with images. It sounds really impressive, right?

Override everything

With the idea to improve the rendering system of current jLayout, Joomla in the next version allows to override everything. This is really a good news to any Joomla developer. Configuring a Joomla template will be easier and you can have more time to create more stunning Joomla 3.x templates.

What will we lose?

Based on the roadmap Joomla published, in the new Joomla 3.5 version, we might say farewell to additional components such as com_newsfeed, com_banners, com_contacts, com_search, com_finder, com_redirect, com_message.

Joomla 3.5: Remove the additional components

By removing these modules, Joomla core will be lighter. It will not cause any trouble for some Joomla users who are familiar with these components as only the new install Joomla packages will be affected, current Joomla websites will be upgraded to 3.5 with no removal which is mention about, also all these extensions will be on JED for you to install if you want. Up to now, we still haven’t had any confirmation from the Joomla team about this removal. However, we are hopefully waiting for a light and compact Joomla package.

In fact, we need to leave behind what are not necessary for a Joomla package!

What should we do?

So, now you have had a detailed look at what will be added and what might be lost in Joomla 3.5. You should have a plan to improve your URLs as well as finding a better solution to replace the additional components.

If you are a developer and want to contribute to the Joomla community, you can join the Jlayouts project by contacting George Wilson at This email address is being protected from spambots.
